Adelante Progressive Caucus

Minutes of regular meeting, 1 June 2023

The Adelante Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party of New Mexico held a regular monthly meeting on Zoom from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday 1 June 2023.

Attendance

Present

  • Carol Courtney (CD-2 chair)
  • Daniel Fay (Treasurer)
  • Patricia French (chair)
  • Frances Gonzales
  • Jay Levine
  • Samuel Nevarez (CD-1 Chair)
  • Nicole Olonovich (Political Director)
  • Scotti Romberg
  • Michael Sperberg-McQueen (secretary)
  • Jane Yee

Call to order

The chair called the meeting to order at 6:38 pm and confirmed that a quorum of the caucus was present.

Reports

Chair

The chair reported that she and Maurreen Skowran had been working on preparations for the farewell party for Cheryl Harris, to be held Sunday 4 June. She suggested the caucus should donate $100 to help fund the party; any residue will be given to Cheryl to help with the costs of her move.

RESOLVED: to authorize a contribution of $100 to the fund for the Cheryl Harris farewell party (moved: NO; seconded: DF).

Other plans for expressing appreciation to long-time contributors to the caucus were discussed.

Treasurer

The treasurer reported that we have $4079.73 in the bank, with net income of $138.86 in May.

The chair and treasurer will make another attempt to get the signatures on the bank account updated.

Treasurer training will be offered by DPNM this summer with a focus on reports party caucuses are required to make to the Secretary of State.

The treasurer is working to prepare the report for July.

Political director

The political director reported that she was stepping back from the idea of making a legislative report card for 2023. Since Adelante had not had an organized lobbying effort during the session, it would seem unfair to fault legislators for not voting as we would have urged them to vote if we had had an organized lobbying effort.

She called several current topics to the caucus’s attention:

  • She hopes for progress on gun violence legislation in the next session. The governor made a commitment to include the topic in the session call; we must hold her to it.

  • In Valencia there is a fight with Niagara bottling company over the amount of water they take out of the county and the amount of profit they derive from it; we should watch that very closely.

  • We should also closely monitor issues relating to fracking (and Harvey Yates).

  • The bill to raise the federal debt ceiling has passed the House; Melanie Stansbury voted against it, but both Gabe Vasquez and Teresa Leger Fernandez voted for it. The provisions of the bill regarding student loans, the gas pipeline in West Virginia, the Trump era tax cuts (not repealed!), and limits on spending make it a disastrous bill, in the political director’s view. Some caucus members felt that on the whole it was a much better deal than could have been expected, given the Republican majority in the House; there was some discussion.

  • 350 New Mexico, and our own Stefi Weisburd, put together a wonderful presentation called “Electrify New Mexico”, which may be viewed on YouTube; more information is available on the 350 New Mexico web site.

Meeting in Socorro 24 June

Cricket Coutney reported on plans for the meeting in Socorro on Saturday 24 June. She will introduce Adelante to people, and Pete Dinelli has agreed to speak. CC said she has no very good idea who will come, but hopes for as many as 20 people. She’s working on a detailed agenda with a discussion of gun violence.

DPNM resolution

Scotti Romberg and Jane Yee reported on recent work on the resolution regarding governance of DPNM statewide committees. The intention is to send it to SPARC, after seeking support from other groups. Several of those involved in preparing the resolution (Scotti Romberg, Patty French, Jay Levine) will meet on 2 June with Jessica Velasquez, so that she is aware the resolution is coming.

We reviewed the current draft of the resolution and discussed what will happen if it is adopted.

[Note: At this point, CC and JL had to leave the meeting, and Frances Gonzales joined the meeting.]

Plans for the summer

We discussed plans for the summer.

RESOLVED: to take a summer break and schedule the next member meeting for September.

The EC will, however, continue to meet. NO volunteered to run an online poll to find a time convenient to members of the EC. [Note: the result was for the second Wednesday of each month; the EC will meet 12 July and 9 August.]

Organizing for the 2024 legislative session

We discussed creating a subcommittee to begin preparations for the 2024 legislative session, and to monitor (and lobby legislators at) meetings of the legislature’s interim committees.

All caucus members interested in participating in this subcommittee are invited to contact Nicole Olonovich, the political director, and cc: Patty French, the caucus chair, as soon as possible.

NO will organize an online poll of possible times to help choose a meeting time for this subcommittee.

Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 8:08 pm.
