REPORT FROM CD2 TO THE ADELANTE CAUCUS AND DPNM
April, 2018 to October 2018
Submitted by CD2 Interim Chair Kathy Wooten
Counties in the 2nd Congressional District of New Mexico:
Cibola, Valencia, Guadalupe, Catron, Socorro, Lincoln, DeBaca, Chaves, Eddy, Lea, Otero, Sierra, Dona Ana, Luna, Hidalgo, and Grant.
New Mexico Congressional District 2 comprises 16 counties in the Southern section of the State, and also includes the Southern one quarter of Albuquerque. It is, geographically, the 5th largest Congressional District in the nation. In addition to the Interim Chair position, the Interim Vice-Chair position was initially held by Martin Rodriguez, then succeeded by Rusty Pearce.
Since the authorization of the Adelante Progressive Caucus at the April 2018 meeting of the State Central Committee, efforts to educate the District about our Caucus, its values and actions, has been physically centered in Dona Ana County. Additional outreach to other counties has begun via email exchanges with members in Otero, Socorro, and Catron Counties.
In July, an Adelante meeting was held in Las Cruces with attendees numbering 11. A basic introduction to the Caucus was given by Interim Chair Kathy Wooten, including the Caucus vision of adhering to the principles included in the Preamble of the Charter of the Democratic Party of the United States. Flyers with Caucus background information, as well as invitation and process for becoming Caucus members were passed out. Representatives of progressive groups from the area were among those attending.
CD2 leadership lobbied its members and State delegates to support the eventually successful effort to minimize the voting power of SuperDelegates at Democratic Presidential Conventions.
CD2 leadership contacted the SCC members in all CD2 counties to invite them to the Adelante Caucus event to be held at the Fall SCC meeting in Roswell, Chaves County, on Friday evening, October 12th prior to the DPNM event supporting the CD2 candidacy of Xochitl Torres-Small.
On October 27th, CD2 leadership and 2 representative members will attend the Catron County Democratic Party Meeting in Pie Town, NM to continue the process of introducing the Caucus to more CD2 Counties, and promoting membership.
