New Mexico’s Congressional District 1, or CD1, covers most of Bernalillo County, all of Torrance County, and parts of Sandoval, Santa Fe and Valencia Counties. CD1 has the advantage of being the most compact Congressional district in the state. It also has about half the members of the caucus.
Mailings from the Adelante Caucus to CD1 also go to all members in Bernalillo County, because they are so close, so the material is generally relevant to them. Maurreen Skowran, interim chair for CD1, sends out regular mailings to CD1 members. If you’d like to learn more or get more involved, write to her at email@example.com.
Within about three months of existence, Congressional District 1 of the Adelante Progressive Caucus has held three events.
- On May 12, we held an informal forum with the following Democratic candidates.
Public Lands Commissioner: George Munoz, Stephanie Garcia Richard, Garrett Veneklasen
- Bernalillo County sheriff: Manuel Gonzales III, Sylvester Stanley, Joe Williams
- Public Regulation Commission District 4: Janene Yazzie
We held our first meeting June 16 at O’Neill’s Pub in Nob Hill. About 25 people attended. We discussed the history and future of the caucus. Topics also included the decision by the Democratic National Committee not to accept donations from the fossil fuel industry, the issue of immigrant children being ripped from their families, and possible activities of CD1 and how members can get involved.
To help oppose immigrant family separations, we held a sign-making party June 28 for the rally on June 30.
The next meetings of CD1 have been tentatively scheduled. They are planned for:
- Sunday, Aug. 12, at 1:15 – 2:45 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2:15 – 3:45 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1:15 – 2:45 p.m.
